Artist's Comments

A piece I just rediscovered, done in my last drawing push before my year and half slump. This simple cat demon with metal wings turned out very warm and engaging. I colored this piece for the FurtherConfusion 2005 Artshow, but it almost didn't make from the reject pile under my bed.

I had inked back in October of 2003, and in over a year couldn't decide what colors would enhance the simple linework. I liked the design, inspired by my demonic phase (note the webbed fingers and toes) but just couldn't finish the piece. CLAMP's manga series Clover was the basis for the mechanical wings, though I tried to give the design some of my own style. I finished the color in a two week push over my Christmas break in order to have work for FC, and I'm still very pleased I gave this piece one more chance.

My theme colors for that last batch of drawings were blue and gold, colors I hadn't used together much since my Sailormoon fanart days of the late 90s. Perhaps these bright shiny colors were inspired by my heighten video game addiction. I had played Halo and Halo 2 all semester, played Katamari Damancy, Disgaia, and Kingdom Hearts over break, and spent the rest of the break watching my boyfriend play through MetalGear Solid 3 and other games. Lots of metal ^^; I especially like the white of her hair against the warm paper.

I used Pigma Micron 005 for the inked outlines, Prismacolor colored pencils for the color, and white gel pen for highlights and hair strands, on beige memory book paper. I scan the drawings into my computer, so that makes the colors a little smoother than they really are.

Your blending on the clothing is just...entrancing. 0.o

This is a wonderful idea. I love those wings. You made them go with the body very nicely. Wonderful clothing and folds and a great job on the fur.

I'm really happy with the blend. I usually have more a shift from dark to light, rich to faded, in my blends, but I like have a rich color to another rich color. I had good luck with blue and gold as I worked on this batch of drawings.

I'm used to the ease of tacking on angelic, demonic, or pixie wings, so this was a bit of challenge. I did want the metal wings to make sense with the rest of the lineart, which isn't very metallic. Glad it worked for you. Her fur was fun because it's so subtle, and I really like her cheek marking.

when i think of some of the things that have been done in the name of science, i have to cringe. no...wait, not science, vandalism. and not cringe, laugh.

Thank you. I'm really happy with this color scheme, though I've moved on to a different set of theme colors now. The wings were really fun, as I've never done in any in that style before. I love flowing lines, so her hair was easily fun to work on. The only problem is inking those graceful curves when my hand is tired :)
